The 2017 Africa Eco Race draws to a close

The 2017 edition of the Africa Eco Race has come to a close with Gev Teddy Sella reigning supreme in the motorcycle category.

The 18-year old KTM rider proved unstoppable throughout the 6,500 km trek across the deserts of Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal as he clinched five of the twelve stages, en route to a stunning maiden triumph.

Sella ended the race 50 minutes and 12 seconds clear of his Norwegian rival Pal Anders Ullevalseter, who dominated the 2015 and 2016 editions.

Meanwhile Vladimir Vasilyev held his nerve to keep his rivals at bay throughout the 12-day annual event, becoming the first Russian winner of the car title. The Mini driver led the overall standings from day one and secured the opening three tests.

Despite winning only one more stage he managed to steadily increase his advantage to eventually finish the race with a two hour and ten minute cushion over his closest rival and Miroslav Zapletal from the Czech Republic.

Andrey Karginov added the Africa Eco Race trucks title to his 2014 Dakar Rally victory. The Russian dominated the class to hand Kamaz a fourth overall victory from the past five editions.

Such was his performance throughout the race, Karginov’s overall time placed him in the top five of the cars and trucks combined.
